:- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Late Night Reviews -- A mixed bag : The normal mixed bag of new and established writers, some brilliant, others much less so. The editorial emphasis seems to be on the presentation of a rich and diverse group of voices with the scattering of experience across different strata of American society (rural, suburban, gay, straight, immigrant, expatriate), which can tend toward sociology instead of literature, alas, when read as a whole. The styles range from painfully earnest to politically outraged to fantastical (will young writers ever escape the influence of George Saunders?). The most accomplished story, by far, is Nicole Krauss' elegantly written "Switzerland," even though the author sort of chickens out at the end. The biggest disappointment is the aforementioned Geo. Saunders, whose entry appears to be his idea of "taking a political stand," something authors probably shouldn't do, as a rule, and particularly not from their comfortable posts in academia, unless they have the moral vision of a Zola, Orwell, Richard Wright or James Baldwin. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Earl -- Excellent collection for our times : The Best American Short Stories 2021, edited and with a wonderful introduction by Jesmyn Ward, is largely what you would expect from such an anthology, a collection of strong short stories that will speak to individual readers differently. In other words, like any collection, even from single authors, some stories will appeal to a reader more than others.
